Isabel Lewis Performance Workshop

KB19 Collateral Programming

Communal Experience in Performing Instantly Created Fiction

Isabel Lewis, a Berlin-based choreographer, was invited by the Karachi Biennale Trust and Goethe Institut to work with performance artists from Karachi, Jamshoro, and Lahore.

"Creating Situational Choreography subverted traditional elements of theater, inviting participants to explore creative new sites of imagining and being through close social interaction."

The performance was the culmination of a intensive two-day experimental workshop. Participants collaborated to compose Situational Choreography, blending the boundaries of dance, physical movement, and fiction-writing.

Removing the traditional stage-audience divide, the performance was completely immersive, allowing audience members to participate and build upon the story. Lewis explained the ground rules to the audience before inviting them to enter the arena, leading to spontaneously created avenues of climaxes and conclusions.

Event Details & Leadership

The performance was followed by a brief introduction to the project by Bushra Hussain, Secretary General of KBT, and a certificate ceremony recognizing the workshop participants.

  • Date: Sunday, June 30, 2019
